CitatGiant machine set to probe secrets of the universe

By Jeremy Lovell

NORWICH (Reuters) - Deep underground on the Franco-Swiss border someone will throw a switch next year to start one of the most ambitious experiments in history, probing the secrets of the universe and possibly finding new dimensions.

The Large Hadron Collider -- a 27-kilometer long circular particle accelerator -- at the CERN experimental facility near Geneva will smash protons into each other at unimaginable speeds trying to replicate in miniature the events of the Big Bang.

"These beams will have the kinetic energy of an aircraft carrier slammed into the size of a zero on a 20 pence piece," Brian Cox of Manchester University told the annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.

"We are going to make mini Big Bangs. There has never been such a jump in particle physics. It will go into an area that we don't really understand," he added.

The fundamental goal of the massive machine is to answer the basic but crucial question of how matter was created at the birth of the universe.

"We don't know what 95 percent of the universe is made of -- which is a bit embarrassing for a subject that claims to be fundamental," Cox said. "There is Dark Matter. It is all over the place but we have no idea what it is."

DARK ENERGY

"There is also something called Dark Energy, and that is an even bigger question. It makes up about 70 percent of the energy in the universe but again we have absolutely no idea what it is.

"It is an incredibly exciting machine. It will be turned on next year and run for at least a decade and probably 20 years and the first results -- if the machine behaves itself -- should start coming out within a year," he added.

If the theories are correct, the machine will create tiny Black Holes that evaporate and possibly even find particles that offer evidence that the three dimensions known to mankind are just a fraction of those that actually exist.

"That would be an even bigger headline than the Black Holes. It could be that there is a whole new universe a millimeter away from our heads but at right-angles to the three dimensions that are here," Cox said.

"That would be a real paradigm shift -- our relegation to a little sheet in a multi-dimensional universe. That kind of thing is really profound and will capture the imagination that perhaps the origin of mass won't, although it should.

"For the first time in many decades we have built a machine that exceeds our powers of prediction. New processes are bound to be discovered," he added. "We are truly journeying into unknown territory."

Cox dismissed worries that by adventuring into the unknown and creating tiny Black Holes, the machine could even threaten to destroy the planet.

"The probability is at the level of 10 to the minus 40," he said.

Parte a complexului de cladiri se afla in Franta si parte in Elvetia. Poti sa treci dintr-o tara in alta mergand pe hol.

Cat despre predictiile facute, ai facut bine ca ai subliniat "If the theories are correct".

Salut dragi colegi
Tocmai gasisem un link dragutz in care este vorba despre un peste care poate exploara cu ajutorul unui vehicol robotic.O camera de filmat filmeaza miscarea pestelui in blobul de apa, trec datele prin computer iar rotile vehicolului se misca in aceasi directie cu directia in care pestele inoata..Foarte interesant si fascinant chiar :-D

Ca orice in viata, uneori apar si erori...
daca tocmai spuneam anterior:
CitatSoftware problem may have caused MGS loss
NASA officials said this week a big in software uploaded to the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft may have led to the permanent loss of communications the spacecraft suffered in November. John McNamee, deputy program manager for NASA's Mars Exploration Program, said at a meeting in the Washington DC area earlier this week that software uploaded to MGS in June overwrote two memory addresses, eventually causing the gimbals that move the spacecraft's solar arrays to hit a hard stop. This put the spacecraft into a safe mode that could have been recovered from, but the spacecraft's radiators were pointed towards the Sun, causing the battery to overheat and fail, dooming the orbiter. That analysis is considered preliminary, and on Wednesday NASA announced that it was convening an internal review board to review the cause of the spacecraft's failure. MGS had been orbiting Mars for over nine years when communications with the spacecraft were lost on November 2.
Realitatea nu corespunde deseori cu teoria, fie in bine, fie in rau.
Aventura continua.

Insa si aici iata au aparut niscaiva probleme:

CitatMars orbiter suffering instrument problems
Posted: Thu, Feb 8 7:24 AM ET (1224 GMT)
Two instruments on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spacecraft, including its high-resolution camera, have encountered problems affecting their performance, the space agency announced Wednesday. The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on MRO is generating an increasing amount of noise in one CCD detector, and similar problems have been noticed in several other CCDs in the camera. The problem has caused on a small degradation of image quality, but engineers are concerned the problems could worsen and are studying the root cause of the noise and ways to mitigate it. A separate instrument, the Mars Climate Sounder, has been skipping steps as it scans the horizon. While the problem was initially corrected with the uplink of revised instructions, the problem reappeared in mid-January. Engineers have stowed the instrument as they attempt to determine its cause. Despite these problems MRO continues to return large volumes of data: since November 2006 the spacecraft has returned as much data as the Mars Global Surveyor did during its entire mission, from 1997 to 2006.

Zicea cineva ca e usor sa faci lucruri de genul acesta (exploram sistemul solar) ?

Nu-i asa mare chestie cu acceleratorul asta, in comparatie cu cercetarile care se fac in secret. Tot asa, sunetele determina si orbitele in sistemele solare.

CitatAURORA MYSTERY MISSION: Scientists have been studying auroras for centuries, and you might suppose there's no mystery left in the Northern Lights. Wrong. Sometimes, with no warning, gently shimmering pale auroras erupt in a riot of wildly-shifting colors. This is called an "auroral substorm" and no one knows what causes it.

Later today (6:01 pm EST), NASA plans to launch a fleet of five satellites into Earth orbit. The name of the mission is THEMIS and its goal is to crack the mystery of the substorm. In the process, researchers hope to learn new things about Earth's magnetosphere. (continued below)

CitatNASA will check for life on one of Jupiter's moons
By Eric Hand
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
02/17/2007

A decade ago, NASA's Galileo probe made a stupendous discovery: A vast, warm, salty ocean — bigger than all of Earth's put together — under the icy crust of Europa, one of Jupiter's four large moons.
Ever since, William McKinnon has been chafing to go back.
"We think the ocean leaks onto the surface," said McKinnon, a planetary scientist at Washington University. "What does that tell us about the chemistry of the water that's down below? And the 64 billion dollar question is, could any of that stuff have the signature of life?"
McKinnon is among a growing choir of scientists who say that Europa offers the best chance for life elsewhere in the solar system. Panel after scientific panel has argued that a mission to Europa should be a priority.

Yet, no mission is in the works.

On Sunday, McKinnon is set to sing Europa's praises at a conference in San Francisco organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Later this month, NASA's New Horizons probe will slingshot around Jupiter on its way to Pluto. As the probe rushes past on Feb. 28, it will get the first close-up pictures of Europa since the Galileo mission ended. McKinnon, a part of New Horizons' science team, says the photos will help scientists discern what kind of salts are staining Europa's icy surface.

About the size of the Earth's moon, Europa is a spherical ice-skating rink, crisscrossed heavily by grooves and cracks. But it is relatively free of impact craters, suggesting that, occasionally, Europa is resurfaced. Scientists are increasingly confident that the ocean is the Zamboni, spilling out from under the ice and refreezing.

Jupiter's gravity creates strong tidal forces that tug at the moon's icy shell and rocky core. Just as bending a paper clip back and forth creates heat, the cyclical bulging of the ice and rock warms the ocean above 32 degrees Fahrenheit even as the surface remains frozen stiff at -260 degrees Fahrenheit.

"After 10 years of work, we've concluded that there really is an ocean. But what we can't decide is just how thick that (ice) shell is," McKinnon said.

That question is hotly debated — and crucial. If the shell is less than a mile or so thick, then cracks could connect the surface to the ocean below, and life-nurturing exchanges could occur.

Sonda automata Mars Phoenix Lander a "murit".
CitatWhile the spacecraft's work has ended, the analysis of data from the instruments is in its earliest stages.

citate:
CitatLaunched Aug. 4, 2007, Phoenix landed May 25, 2008, farther north than any previous spacecraft to land on the Martian surface. The lander dug, scooped, baked, sniffed and tasted the Red Planet's soil. Among early results, it verified the presence of water-ice in the Martian subsurface, which NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter first detected remotely in 2002. Phoenix's cameras also returned more than 25,000 pictures from sweeping vistas to near the atomic level using the first atomic force microscope ever used outside Earth.

Phoenix's preliminary science accomplishments advance the goal of studying whether the Martian arctic environment has ever been favorable for microbes. Additional findings include documenting a mildly alkaline soil environment unlike any found by earlier Mars missions; finding small concentrations of salts that could be nutrients for life; discovering perchlorate salt, which has implications for ice and soil properties; and finding calcium carbonate, a marker of effects of liquid water.

Phoenix findings also support the goal of learning the history of water on Mars. These findings include excavating soil above the ice table, revealing at least two distinct types of ice deposits; observing snow descending from clouds; providing a mission-long weather record, with data on temperature, pressure, humidity and wind; observations of haze, clouds, frost and whirlwinds; and coordinating with NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to perform simultaneous ground and orbital observations of Martian weather.
